With road trauma tragically touching many lives this summer, it is a timely reminder for young people to take care when behind the wheel and out with friends.

Alfred Health’s Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth (P.A.R.T.Y.) program shows young people the damaging effects of making risky choices through presentations by patients and clinical staff.

Participants are also given hands-on experience with some of the equipment used in trauma care and rehabilitation.

Last year, the program was delivered to 825 participants across 27 sessions at both The Alfred and offsite.

Young Zalen (right, pictured role playing with Senior Physiotherapist Lara Kimmel) was one of the first to attend the P.A.R.T.Y program earlier this month.

The 16 year old said he realised the importance of taking care and of himself and looking out for his mates.

“Seeing and listening to patients’ stories made me realise I never want to go through the pain they’ve experienced, and I don’t want my family to either,” Zalen said.

Outreach programs and classroom kits are available, as spots are filled for the next 12 months.
