Supporting the future growth and development of The Alfred's internationally respected infectious diseases and HIV medicine program is the goal of a global search to recruit the unit's next director and professor.
With today's announcement that Professor Sharon Lewin will commence as the inaugural director of the Doherty Institute in September 2014, an opportunity opens up for another world-class individual to join The Alfred.
Chief Executive Andrew Way said Alfred Health - alongside Monash University and the Burnet Institute - will be looking to embrace the change as a means of building further on the already strong clinical excellence and internationally respected clinical and laboratory research programs at The Alfred.
"Professor Lewin has been a leader in infectious diseases and HIV medicine for more than two decades. She has had an outstanding record of attracting research dollars, and for making significant world-first advancements, particularly in her chosen specialty of HIV.
"While Professor Lewin will be greatly missed, we thank her for her contribution over many years, and wish her well in her new role," Mr Way said.
Professor Lewin currently heads the Department of Infectious Diseases, Alfred Health and Monash University and is co-head of the Centre for Biomedical Research, Burnet Institute. She is the Local Co-Chair of AIDS 2014, which is being held in Melbourne in July.
